Ogden Street Intersection Re-engineering

In August 2008, The Port of Menominee/KK Integrated Logistics partnered with the City of Marinette to take steps to accommodate the needs of the oversized trucks necessary to successfully transport the oversized wind components from the Port of Menominee site. KKIL has been receiving wind turbines since 2007 which consist of several components including blades, tower sections, nacelles, and hubs.

The wind blades and tower sections require extremely specific and oversized trucking equipment. The turning radius of these components proves to be a challenge for even the experienced, specialized drivers operating the units.

The most direct and viable route from the Port directs the trucks southeast out of the Port and over the Ogden Street bridge connecting the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. Approximately two blocks beyond the bridge into Wisconsin represented a challenge: the intersection of Russell (ultimately Cleveland Avenue) and Ogden. This intersection proved to be the most difficult point of the local route for drivers to navigate due to the 90 degree right corner turn necessary to turn onto Russell.

KKIL partnered with City of Marinette to re-engineer the corner and improve the maneuverability and road space for the drivers. KKIL purchased the property and managed the demolition and tree removal work, then donated the property to the City of Marinette. The City of Marinette constructed the new curbs and laid the pavement in the intersection. By widening the angle of the turn, trucks are now able to proceed down the designated route (on Cleveland) with far more ease. Tom Kuber, KKIL president states, "Not only is this a good example of what we at KKIL are willing to do to work with our customers and their needs, but also of the extreme cooperation from our local municipalities and city governments. Both the Cities of Menominee and Marinette have been wonderful partners over the years, making it possible to attract businesses into our communities".
